Basic information:
Once famous ornithological reserve and today a special nature reserve, this large wetland-forest complex is located along the Sava river in the southern Srem (Vojvodina, Serbia). The highest value of the area is the authentic combination of stagnant tributaries, ponds, pits, marsh vegetation, wet meadows and forests with extremely rich diversity of ecosystems and species, especially endangered. Obedska swamp is one of the few still preserved floodplain wetland areas with specific characteristics such as the centuries-old mixed-oak forests, colonies of wading birds and many natural rarities. The swamp is the rest of the old meander channel of the river Sava, whose main stream now flows southern. Its riverbed, in which edge are the villages of Obrez and Kupinovo,is called a "horseshoe"because of its shape. Higher land part, intersected with water depressions and habitats of old oak forest is called "Kupinske grede". Obedska swamp is known for a variety of wetland and forest habitats, many species of mammals, fish, amphibians, reptiles, insects and extreme wealth of flora, fish fauna and especially of bird fauna.

Wider area:
Obrež 44 44 06 19 58 12
Obrež is a village in Serbia at the municipality of Pećinci in Srem district.

Kupinovo 44 4212 20 02 32 -Kupinovo is the only Srem village which was a royal city. There are remains of the city Kupinik, the seat of the Serbian despot Lazarevic and Djuradj Brankovic. In 1521. the Turks were captured and burned it. In Kupinovo there is the church of St. Luke's known among the villagers as despotic church, which is the oldest Orthodox church northern from the Sava and Danube rivers. Fundamentally destroyed it was rebuilt in 1730. The oldest part of the village has been preserved and protected as an ethno-village and there are some of the oldest houses in Vojvodina, which are legally protected as cultural heritage of Serbia. There are houses of the early nineteenth century, which were made by plaiting with a thatched roof. Houses had porches and Doxa with wooden poles and arches.

IPA – Important Plant Area since 2005th
Ramsar locality since 1977th

On the basis of literary data on the area of the Obedska swampit was recorded over 280 plant species. Vegetable-geographical data (Obradovic, Budak, Acević, 1977) indicate the presence of narrow distribution of plants, such as: the Pannonian, Dacian, Mediterranean and Atlantic species. Analisys of the elements of the flora indicates the presence of endemic, relict and rare species. Of the endemic species are important subendemic representatives of rest harrow (Ononis Spinoso - hircine) and types of clover (Trifolium angulatum) that emphasize the character of the Pannonian area. Carpathian plant Banat knapweed (Centaurea banatica), of Dacian - Pontic elements of the flora is found in this transitional forest - steppe area on the western borders of the distibution. A group of Mediterranean plants represented in a significant cumulative kind of Central European character, water chestnut (Trapa natans agg.) which is now in retreat, and acts as a relict species. Of middle-European elements of flora important are the types of water biotope of Obedska swamp: white water lily (Nymphaea alba) and a water-soldier (Stratiotes aloides) which only in this area form rich and unique plant communities. Important for the flora of Obedska swamp is a relict species of wider distribution, Aldrovanda - waterwheel plant (Aldrovanda vesiculoza), which is, in our country, recorded only near Kupinovo . In the latest research (Obradovic et al. 1977 Gajic, Karađić, 1991) it was not found. As the rest of the former culture it was recorded a medicinal kind, sweet flag or Calamus (Acorus calamus), which is in the process of retreat in the Pannonian part of our country. The protection of these species is provided by Regulation on the Protection of Natural Rarities of Serbia, as a protection of the first degree which includes a ban on use, destruction and taking other actions which could endanger protected species and their habitats.

So far, the Special Nature Reserve "Obedska swamp" recorded 222 kinds of birds. In addition to birds, the reserve is inhabited by a large number of species, 50 species of mammals, 16 species of fish, more than 1200 insect species, over 200 species of zooplanctons, 180 species of fungi.

Geology, geomorphology and hydrology:
Changing climatic conditions in older Pleistocene age, causes reduction of precipitation and air temperature, which caused that the ancient Sava river slow down its flow and accumulate large amounts of sediments, leading to moving bed of the river.
